‘Some years ago I had a young man who had a dreadful neck tumour. After about one year his condition deteriorated and he entered the final terminal phase of his illness.
He had multiple distressing symptoms including breathing difficulties, pain, itch and increasing weakness.
He begged me for help to die as he found his ongoing existence torture. His request was completely understandable, but unfortunately I was unable to comply with his wishes due to the ban on Assisted Dying.‘

‘I am a recently retired GP who practiced in Cork for 30 years. Over these years I experienced first hand the distress faced by patients with terminal illness either due to cancer or neurodegenerative disease, when death is inevitable.
I feel we should follow the example of other countries and provide medical assistance to help such patients die with dignity, if this is their choice.
A compassionate society should have legislation to allow for this.’

’Assisted Dying is simply about offering patients a choice at the end of their life. Providing choices to people who have a terminal physical illness - and are fearful of or possess intolerable suffering - is the definition of compassionate medicine.
A society- including our legislature and medical infrastructure- should respect and support their reasonable choice.
As doctors we try to prevent illness, sometimes we can cure an illness, but we can’t always do this. People with an incurable condition don’t want to die. That choice has been taken away. We should be there as a society, to respect their right for them to die in a manner that they wish’.
